Ah, well, it works most of the time, but it sometimes gets confused
about how much new mail I have (and misreports it).
And really, it should be running the mail-checking bit in a separate
process/thread so it doesn't block further-- if you have a lot of mail
in your inbox, further just sorta locks once a minute while it reads
through it.

Making things work with the callback-based model is really difficult,
and there are a lot of gotchas... but sadly, I've thought about it at
great length and I think there may not be a better way of doing it.
